Dear Parents,
A “communicant’s class” is a special class designed to help covenant children transition from being, what we call, non-communing members to full communing members of GCC. That means that, not only will they be given all the rights and privileges of full church membership, but they will be admitted participation in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper by the session. It is, most importantly, the time when our covenant children first make a public profession of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
There is no precise age nor is there any fool-proof way to know if you child is ready. The good news is this is a no-pressure situation. Here are some questions to ask yourself if you are trying to decide what to do. Is your child asking good questions and showing an ongoing interest in their faith, the Bible, theology, etc. Are they asking good questions about the sacraments, particularly the Lord’s Supper? Have they made a profession of faith with you or another trusted adult, or are they asking about what it means to be a Christian?
This summer we will be offfering a Communicant’s Class on Sunday mornings after worship for five weeks starting June 1st. We normally do not have Sunday school programs during the month of June. We set aside the hour after corporate worship for fellowship during the summer. The Communicant’s Class will take place during that fellowship hour.
Here is a list of the topics and dates for the class along with a link to download the lessons.
June 8 – Session 2: What is Justification?
June 15 – Session 3: What is Sanctification?
June 22 – Session 4: What is the Church?
