Grace Community Church volunteers have been helping Cordova Elementary School kindergarten teachers and students by working with the children to reinforce the reading skills they are being taught. Each week, we spend an hour working with the children in each of the six classes who need the most help. A total of six volunteers are needed each week. Some volunteers go every week, others every other week, and others fill in as they can.
We also have a fall supply drive to purchase supplies for children whose families are not able to purchase all they need: supply boxes, chair bags, and agenda books. In addition, we collect coats, hats, and mittens/gloves for the Shelby County winter coat drive and deliver them directly to Cordova Elementary.
Last year, we were able to purchase 14 supply boxes as well as a few chair bags and a stack of agenda books. Some were extras to have on hand as new students transfer in throughout the semester. The staff at the school extends their thanks to GCC for their support!
This upcoming school year (2018-2019), GCC will partner with Cordova Elementary School to provide supplies for Kindergarten students. The boxes are $60 and contain all the necessary supplies. Please make all checks out to Grace Community Church and put on the memo section of the check Cordova Elementary Supply Drive. Other items being requested specifically by the teachers are snacks and trinkets for rewards. If you wish to donate these items, please contact Janet Wunrow at email@example.com
Reading Volunteers Needed
GCC will also be serving Cordova Elementary by sending volunteers to read to students. This year the leadership of CES has asked us to provide to them our availability to serve. If you are interested in participating, please communicate your available days and times by contacting Janet Wunrow or Michael Joyner at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. Reading volunteers will start in September.
